The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God
On January 1, Catholics honor Mary’s unique role in salvation history with the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, a Holy Day of Obligation. This feast underscores Mary’s title as Theotokos, or “God-bearer,” a doctrine officially declared at the Council of Ephesus in 431. At the close of the council, the faithful filled the streets, joyfully proclaiming, “Praised be the Theotokos!”
Mary’s title as “Mother of God” is rooted in the Incarnation, where, as St. Paul teaches:
“God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law” (Galatians 4:4).
Vatican II’s Lumen Gentium highlights this doctrine by referring to Mary as “Mother of God” 12 times, further affirming her pivotal role in the Church’s mission. On this day, the Church also observes the World Day of Peace, an initiative started by Pope Paul VI and continued by Pope John Paul II, inviting all to pray for peace in our hearts, families, and world.
As we begin the new year, attending Mass on January 1 allows us to entrust 2025 to Mary’s intercession, seeking her guidance and maternal care. Join the universal Church in celebrating this profound mystery of faith and peace.
