"For I know the plans I have for you . . ."

Jeremiah 29:11

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

There is a somewhat well-known quote that is attributed to author, humorist, and former Connecticut resident, Mark Twain –– "The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why." This quote suggests that discovering one's purpose or reason for existence is a pivotal moment that gives meaning and direction to one's life.

Earlier this summer I had the immense joy of celebrating the ordination of eight dedicated and faithful men to the diaconate. These ordinations are not only a significant milestone in their individual journeys, but they are also a cause for celebration for our entire faith community.

First and foremost, let us extend our warmest congratulations and prayers to our three newly ordained transitional deacons, Julian Cuervo, Eric Hosmer, and Alex Pandolfe. Embracing the transitional diaconate, they have shown great courage and humility in responding to God's call. This period of formation and discernment will further shape their spiritual growth, preparing them for their ultimate vocation as priests. As transitional deacons, they will serve as bridges between the laity and the clergy, facilitating the sacramental life of the Church and embodying Christ's servant-leadership.

We acknowledge with gratitude the support and guidance provided by the faculty and staff of Mount St. Mary seminary, who have played a crucial role in the education of Julien, Eric, and Alex. Please keep them in your prayers as we eagerly anticipate their ordination to the priesthood after this final year of preparation.

We also recognize the immense importance of the permanent diaconate within our Church. The five men ordained into this sacred order –– Deacons Joseph Delaney, Mark Desrosiers, Christopher Hammond, David Imhof and Ronald Krystofik –– have each made a lifelong commitment to serve our diocese in a unique and invaluable way. The permanent diaconate exemplifies the integration of faith, family, and service. These deacons continue their vocations within their families, professions, and parishes, serving as visible signs of Christ's servant leadership and bringing His love and mercy to the entire community.

The diaconate reminds us of the indispensable role of service in the life of every Christian. Whether we are called to the ordained ministry, married life, or the single life, we are all called to serve one another in love, imitating the selflessness and humility of Christ.

As we extend our heartfelt congratulations to all our newly ordained deacons, let us also remember that their ministry is not theirs alone. We, as a faith community, are called to support and encourage them as they navigate their respective paths, seeking to live out God's will in their lives.

May these ordinations also serve as a reminder for us to pray fervently for an increase in vocations, that more men respond to God’s call to the priesthood. If you can, please join me, and others throughout the diocese, in praying a Eucharistic Holy Hour for vocations at 6 pm on September 21 at Saint Patrick Church in Mystic.

It is my earnest prayer that more men and women may experience the profound joy of discovering the specific plans that God has for them.

With a heart full of gratitude and hope, I remain,
Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Michael R. Cote
