The Cathedral of Saint Patrick, located in historic Norwich, Connecticut, is seeking a full time Director of Music and Organist.

Position to be filled: August, 2019

Director of Music Responsibilities:
  • Select, plan and coordinate liturgically appropriate music for all liturgies of the parish and various diocesan liturgies held at the Cathedral
  • Direct the following choirs:
    • Cathedral Choir (20-25 members, weekly rehearsals)
    • Cathedral Children’s Choir (15 members, gr. 3-6, weekly rehearsals)
    • Cathedral Bell Choirs (Adult, High School, Youth, weekly rehearsals)
    • Norwich Diocesan Choir (30-40 members with paid section leaders)
  • Administer the Diocesan Music Budget
  • Oversee maintenance of Cathedral musical instruments
  • Maintain Cathedral Music Library (choral and brass)
  • Responsible for the cleanliness of the choir room and choir loft
  • Coordinate the scheduling of concerts by visiting musical organizations
  • Nurture the existing liturgical music program and develop areas where needed
  • Oversee the operation of the Schulmerich Digital Carillon
Organist Responsibilities:
  • Organist for three weekend Mass (5:00 PM Saturday, 9:00 & 10:30 AM Sunday)
  • Organist for Holy Day Masses, Easter Triduum, and additional services and liturgies (e.g. Stations of the Cross, Confirmation, First Communion, etc.)
  • Organist for funerals and weddings
  • Organist for Cathedral School Masses

Musical Instruments:

  • Aeolian-Skinner Organ, Opus 1267  (restoration in 2002) 3 manuals, 42 ranks
  • McNealy Chamber Organ  (1992)  1 manual, 4 ranks
  • Yamaha 6’ grand piano  (choir room)
  • Technics Digital Piano  (choir loft)
  • Technics Digial Piano  (Cathedral front)
  • Schulmerich Handbells  (4 octaves)
  • Malmark Handchimes  (3 Octaves)
  • Schulmerich Digital Carillon
Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Thorough knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgical practice, as well as familiarity with the Church’s patrimony of Sacred Music and documents on the Sacred Liturgy
  • Excellent organ and piano skills
  • Excellent choral conducting skills
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Committed to living, i.e., conducting one’s public activities and relationships, in a manner that is compatible with the mission and moral teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in music and minimum of three years experience
